Clearly, short listing applicants is just the first stage in the selection process. Once you have your short list, you need to assess the capabilities of the candidates, and select the best person for the job. Although the one-to-one interview is the most common selection method used in organisations today, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that it can also be the least reliable. There are many other things you can do to give candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their suitability for a particular job. This training activity looks at a range of selection methods and identifies their strengths and weaknesses. It also looks at the use of particular selection methods, or combinations of methods, for particular types of levels of jobs.

You start this training activity by explaining to participants that there are a range of selection methods they can use to identify the best candidate for the job and that these methods each have different strengths and weaknesses. This training activity is designed to familiarise them with these methods and to give them the knowledge they need to select the most appropriate method for particular types of vacancy. You then lead participants in a brainstorming session to suggest ideas of selection methods. Any methods they don’t identify you add to the list, before going on to check that participants understand each method. You then get participants to take part in a group exercise in which they have to link a series of strengths and weaknesses with the appropriate selection methods. This is followed by your explaining the suitability of particular selection methods for certain types, or levels, or jobs. Finally, you conclude that training activity with a reminder of the key learning points in it.
