Conflict. A powerful word that suggests a fight or a struggle; winners and losers. Consequently, we often find the suggestion of conflict threatening. We become defensive or aggressive, we ignore it or try to walk away from it. All are classic responses associated with stress.

For this training activity participants discuss, in a plenary session, the causes and effects of conflict at work. Working in pairs, the go on to role-play a win–lose conflict situation. After a plenary feedback session you introduce them to the concept of win–win conflict. Finally, they again role-play in pairs to reinforce their understanding of the win–win process.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to help participants to recognise that conflict is a key source of pressure at work. This training activity shows that, managed appropriately, conflict need not be a source of undue stress.
