Open this training activity by explaining to participants that all disciplinary action taken against an employee, apart from informal verbal admonishments, should be recorded, so that details are available when deciding what action to take if the employee should break the rules again. However, if there is no further breach, warnings should be disregarded fro disciplinary purposes after a set period.

All disciplinary action taken against an employee, apart from informal verbal admonishments, should be recorded, so that details are available when deciding what action to take if the employee should break the rules again. However, if there is no further breach, warnings should be disregarded for disciplinary action after a set period. Some organisations operate a wipe-clean policy, whereby the record is then completely removed from the person’s file. This includes the copy that was given to the employee – they should be told to destroy it. Participants are asked to consider what they feel are appropriate periods of time for different disciplinary actions to remain active. These are usually referred to as the specified ‘life’ of the warning. You discuss participants’ answers with them, and explore how such policies should work in practice. This simple training activity forms a useful energiser for appropriate times in a training programme. Participants need to apply common sense rather than specific knowledge. They can work singly on this case study but, if you have a large group, you may want them to work in pairs.
