Women returning to paid work after a break from employment are a valuable source of experience. They bring with them an accumulation of skills. Some of these will come from their former job career, others may have been learned, day by day, in meeting the diverse demands of running home and family. The wise employer will maximise an investment in women returners by helping them reintegrate in the workplace and strike a balance with their total life activities.
You begin this training activity with a brief consideration of the statistics showing the impact of women in the job market. Participants complete a questionnaire and work in groups to develop views on the issues which concern women when re-entering paid work. After this exercise you run a full feedback discussion aimed at enlarging on and adding to the points made by the participants. The participants carry out a self-scoring job competence audit such as would help a returnee to develop competence and move forward in a career. A final exercise considers the changes in an organisation that could help reintegrate women returnees.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to consider how things might be changed in an organisation so that returnees might reintegrate more easily and give management the advantage of this valuable pool of labour.
