When members of a team have been working together for some time, they build up a feeling of co-operation and understanding of how other members of the team think, act, and like to contribute to the team’s work. Similarly, the creativity and effective working of a team should never be stifled. It sometimes needs to be allowed to develop and used in its own way for the team to feel it is in control of its own destiny. This exercise is designed for exactly this situation. It asks the participants to design their own team working activity, hence ‘do it yourself’.
You start the training activity by asking the participants if there are areas or topics of team working they would still like to cover, or in which they would like more experience. The participants then design and run their own team work activity to meet their identified need (s). If there are no further requirements, you invite them to design an activity ‘just for fun’, or to further consolidate an area in which they have already done some work. The design of their activity is structured around those the participants have already completed. The participants debrief their own activity and then have a separate discussion of what they have learned from designing and running their own exercise.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to draw on all of their teamwork skills to design their own teamwork exercise.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers towards the end of a team working course when the participants already have plenty of experience of working together and have experienced a number of other teamwork activities. They will by then have a good idea of the typical structure of such a training activity.
