This training activity elicits and combines participants’ experiences of the changes in the nature of employment and work over the last few years. People learn best when the new information makes connections to what they already know, so it is helpful to get participants to review their knowledge and views at the start.
Individuals reflect on what they’ve seen happen to the nature of work, and record these views on a form. In syndicates, participants share views and arrive at a joint statement, which they then record on a prepared OHT. The OHTs are shown and discussed in a plenary session while you elicit any missing factors by asking appropriate questions. You may also choose4 to supply some factual data. You also elicit from the group actions for moving forwards and record these on another OHT as they emerge. The completed OHTs are photocopied to become handouts, so that participants have a more permanent record of what the group has agreed. It is significant that they ‘own’ the handouts, having generated them themselves rather than having had to accept your ideas.
Who is it for: This training activity is intended for trainers to use to define the context for CPD by eliciting a joint view of the current psychological contract between employer and employed, and agreeing the implications for the professional development of participants in the learning group.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers for setting the context for someone’s CPD programme. It relates CPD to the working situation and to the constraints and opportunities of current European society, and helps to motivate participants to engage in CPD. It also sets the scene well for the training activity ‘The Survivor’s Toolkit’, which provides targets for people to aim at.
