People can meet many different barriers to CPD and may run out of ideas for overcoming these. Support from others and a chance to share difficulties and solutions can counter discouragements and setbacks, especially if people can think creatively. This training activity helps people to ‘think the unthinkable’ in generating new ways to tackle their CPD issues.

After a brief review of any barriers to CPD which the group has already raised in other sessions, you describe the differences between logical problem solving and creative problem solving. An introduction to the process of brainstorming follows, and then people practise the technique in groups of four to seven. The ideas generated by each group are passed to another group for evaluation and development, and the training activity ends with group and personal action plans.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to develop their ability to think creatively and generate original answers to the difficulties they meet in working on their own CPD programmes. This helps to gain people’s commitment to their action plans.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers on a short programme as an introduction to creative problem solving. It can also be used near the start of second and later modules of a programme as a solution-focused review of people’s experiences since the previous module. This training activity works best when it is introduced by the training activity, ‘What’s Worked and Not Worked?’ which provides a problem-focused review of experiences to give a better understanding of causes and difficulties. If you cannot spare enough time to run ‘What’s Worked and Not Worked?, then choose one of the alternative introductions suggested in the 'Possible modifications to this activity' section.
