The Equal Pay Act was passed in 1970 and came into operation with the Sex Discrimination Act in 1975. These Acts were intended to bring about greater equality of treatment and opportunity between women and men. The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) was set up at the same time to help achieve the legislative objective. Since then there have been many changes and some organisations are now realising the business advantages of equality in general, in addition to the cost of disobeying the law.
You begin this training activity by introducing the participants to the types of discrimination in the workplace and the legislation currently in place. Then in small groups, the participants examine the impact of the changes at work for men and women since 1975 and share their findings with all the participants. You provide additional information about the changes the participants looked at in the exercise. Again working in small groups, the participants carry out a positive thinking exercise to consider what organisations can do to improve the situation for women. You give further examples of what organisations can do to develop the appreciation of the contribution of women in their workforce.
