Managers and team leaders are always saying they have too much to do in too little time. In fact, part of the ‘problem’ is that they don’t delegate enough. This is a tricky challenge for most of us but a key skill of management. In this delegation skills training activity, participants are asked to undertake an exercise in which, if it is to be successful, the tasks of one half of the group must be delegated to the other half of the group.
After explaining that the purpose of this training activity is to explore effective delegation skills, you divide the group into two and give them the task of moving as much water as possible from one side of a ‘gully’ to the other within a time limit. One group will be using delgation skills to delegate the task to the other. Once the delegation task is completed, the group analyse the experience and its application to delegation in the workplace, working in pairs, in a plenary session.
