This training activity will improve the communication skills of managers so they are able to communicate effectively when face to face with others.
You introduce the training activity by establishing that communication is a central part of any manager’s role. This is reinforced by a short exercise in which the participants chart the network of people with whom they are in regular contact. You introduce the group to the three aspects of communication they need to master if they want to develop effectiveness in this area: questioning techniques, body language, and responding skills. Through a variety of small-group exercises you enable the participants to recognise and develop each of these. The training activity ends with each member identifying a key area they can easily apply to either their work or home life which will have an immediate impact on developing their communication skills.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers at the foundation stage of any event designed to improve the communication skills of managers. It is equally applicable as a refresher for experienced managers or as an introduction for new entrants. Communication skills underpin all aspects of managerial performance. This activity can also be used on a variety of other management development events such as assertiveness skills, developing sales staff, introduction to management, negotiation and influencing skills, team leadership skills, and interviewing skills courses of all types, for example, selection, appraisal, counselling, and so on.
