Although aggressive behaviour is usually thought of as being angry, loud and dominating, in terms of assertive behaviour it relates to a lack of respect for the rights of others. It can appear quiet and friendly; for example, the colleague you have asked to come back later because you are busy, but who insists on telling you ‘just one more thing …’ Manipulative behaviour is also aggressive. For example, ‘Please could you sort this photocopier out? With your expertise it won’t take a minute and I always make a mess of it’. Although the initial appearance is of non-assertive behaviour, the flattery and self-deprecation make it more difficult to refuse.
Participants consider their reactions in the face of everyday aggression and learn how to maintain their assertiveness in difficult situations.
