This training activity will enable participants to continue to develop their management skills and expertise.
You start the training activity by leading a discussion to establish that in order to remain effective as a manager the participants need to be committed to their own personal development. Next, you introduce the concept that learning is an action-based process that will help them move around ‘the learning cycle’. Leading on from this, you now introduce them to a list of competencies required for effective managers and give them an opportunity to rate the importance of these to their current roles and how effectively they can perform in each. The participants then share their ratings in small groups. Their fellow participants give feedback and help each individual prioritise their development needs. You reconvene and lead a whole group discussion to identify a wide range of work-based opportunities that can be used to develop participants’ management skills. The next part of the training activity involves each participant working with a partner to produce an action plan for their own continuing development. Finally, you lead a plenary review to focus on the key steps each participant will take after the learning event. You close with a short celebration which recognises the participants’ success in completing the learning programme.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to end a programme of learning that aims to develop management skills. Although each individual activity that appears in ‘The Essentials of Management’ ends with an action plan encouraging the participants to transfer their learning back to their workplace, this particular training activity takes an overview of the whole process and encourages long-term self-development after any formal learning programme has finished. Although designed to end an event primarily for managers this training activity can be quickly adapted for ending any development programme. You will need to review the competencies and perhaps substitute any that aren’t applicable with some that are more appropriate.
