There is a generally well-held belief that if you ask someone to assess their own performance and share it with someone else, particularly a manager, that assessment will have a positive bias. However, this is not so consistently borne out as is feared. People will, in fact, tend to be harder on themselves than their manager would be, particularly when the relationship is positive. Nevertheless, the skill of self-assessment seems to be valuable in managing performance as it can help an individual to own their achievements and their shortcomings, and this is a good basis for development. Self-assessment also depends on the establishment of an atmosphere in which it is permissible to disclose one's strengths and potential weaknesses to one's manager. This activity is about practising self-assessment and exploring disclosure.
The activity opens with a discussion on the role of self-assessment in managing one's performance, and managerial behaviours that would encourage or discourage disclosure. You give some examples of your own to show what is easy and what is difficult about disclosure, then the participants share with a partner something about themselves. Referring to the Johari Window model, the participants look at the advantages of disclosure, and practise self-assessment and disclosure using the teamwork/interpersonal skills and communication components of the competency framework supplied with this activity. The activity closes with a review of the key learning points about self-assessment and disclosures as part of supervision and appraisal.
