‘I’m sorry to trouble you. I can see you’re busy, but do you think you could …’ ‘Shove it mate. If you think I’m taking on any more, well, you’d best think again.’ When you’re under too much pressure the chances are that at one extreme you fight back and become aggressive. At the other, you withdraw into yourself and become submissive. Neither of these behaviours is helpful. Both of them increase the stress that you’re under. And when you behave aggressively or submissively you put others under pressure, too. Learning to behave in as assertive manner is one of the key skills of successful stress management.

This stress management training activity begins with you role-playing three different characters, after which the participants, through plenary instruction and discussion, learn about three different styles of behaviour. Working on their own they identify different behaviours and look at the effect each style has on stress. In pairs, they go on to experience assertive behaviour through role-play. Finally, they work on their own to develop a plan for behaving more assertively in a chosen work situation to improve stress management.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to extend the principles outlined in ‘Mind your language’. Participants are able to explore three different behaviour styles (aggressive, assertive and non-assertive) and how they relate to pressure and stress management
